American Poetry: Carolyn D. Wright

On January 12 of this very year, it was with great sadness that the world of American letters received the news of Carolyn D. Wright’s death, better known to her readers and students as C.D. Wright (1949-2016). Today at Círculo de Poesía we pay homage to her memory with a selection of five of her poems in English and Spanish. Born in the Ozark Mountains, Wright’s style is impossible to catalog as part of a specific school, and is often described (even by herself) as a constant tension between contradictions: connected to the southern country, yet sophisticated, experimental, and at the same time very clear and concrete. Among the multiple honors that she received during her lifetime are: becoming Rhode Island’s Poet Laureate in 1994, receiving the MacArthur Fellowship in 2004, and the National Book Critics Circle Award for her book One With Others. Spanish translations by Esteban López Arciga (1994).

aunque no pueda
siquiera cambiar una pizca del mundo

Lake Echo, Dear

Is the woman in the pool of light
really reading or just staring
at what is written

Is the man walking in the soft rain
naked or is it the rain
that makes his shirt transparent

The boy in the iron cot
is he asleep or still
fingering the springs underneath

Did you honestly believe
three lives could be complete

The bottle of green liquid
on the sill is it real

The bottle on the peeling sill
is it filled with green

Or is the liquid an illusion
of fullness

How summer’s children turn
into fish and rain softens men

How the elements of summer
nights bid us to get down with each other
on the unplaned floor

And this feels painfully beautiful
whether or not
it will change the world one drop

y salsa barbecue. Las paredes y
los pisos solían ser bellos.
Los calcetines amarillentos y casi iguales.
El membrillo quemado por la plaga
pero dándonos cuatro tazas de mermelada
al final. Largas caminatas para fortalecer
la espalda. Tú con fuego labial
yo con orzuelo. Ojos
tenemos y somos presa eterna
de los dientes del otro. Las corrientes
marchan sobre nosotros. El trueno no ha dañado
a nadie que conozcamos. El río que nos
atraviesa es sucio y profundo. La mano
izquierda protege al ritmo. Cuida
tu cabeza. El fuego no debe ser
desatendido. Más si hay viento. Cada uno
recibe gratis una navaja suiza.
Las primeras lenguas son para
prepararse.
tan triste tan macabra tan hermosa.
Bendita sea. Tenemos tan poco tiempo
para aprender, tantas cosas… El río
corre sucio y profundo. Cubre la lechuga.
Ya descansa. Oh alma. Sigue fluyendo. Mejor.

Everything Good between Men and Women

Everything good between men and women
has been written in mud and butter
and barbecue sauce. The walls and
the floors used to be gorgeous.
The socks off-white and a near match.
The quince with fire blight
but we get two pints of jelly
in the end. Long walks strengthen
the back. You with a fever blister
and myself with a sty. Eyes
have we and we are forever prey
to each other’s teeth. The torrents
go over us. Thunder has not harmed
anyone we know. The river coursing
through us is dirty and deep. The left
hand protects the rhythm. Watch
your head. No fires should be
unattended. Especially when wind. Each
receives a free swiss army knife.
The first few tongues are clearly
preparatory. The impression
made by yours I carry to my grave. It is
just so sad so creepy so beautiful.
Bless it. We have so little time
to learn, so much… The river
courses dirty and deep. Cover the lettuce.
Call it a night. O soul. Flow on. Instead.

Aproximadamente por siempre

Ella cambiaba por dentro
era cierto lo que se había escrito

La nueva sintaxis del amor
ya drenada y quemada

El secreto se aferró a ellos
Ella recibió el aroma

Caminando por un camino hacia la nada
cualquier sonido era relevante

Ahora el sol caía detrás de ellos
él se veía extrañamente conmovido

Ella se quitaría la ropa
para la cámara

lo dijo en un inglés simple
pero no sostendría esa serpiente

Approximately Forever

She was changing on the inside
it was true what had been written

The new syntax of love
both sucked and burned

The secret clung around them
She took in the smell

Walking down a road to nowhere
every sound was relevant

The sun fell behind them now
he seemed strangely moved

She would take her clothes off
for the camera

she said in plain english
but she wasn’t holding that snake

No habrá
más platos de mantequilla disparados del cielo. Luz difuminada.
Francamente, querido. Francamente, querida. Francamente.

only the crossing counts

It’s not how we leave one’s life. How go off
the air. You never know do you. You think you’re ready
for anything; then it happens, and you’re not. You’re really
not. The genesis of an ending, nothing
but a feeling, a slow movement, the dusting
of furniture with a remnant of the revenant’s shirt.
Seeing the candles sink in their sockets; we turn
away, yet the music never quits. The fire kisses our face.
O phthsis, o lotharian dead eye, no longer
will you gaze on the baize of the billiard table. No more
shooting butter dishes out of the sky. Scattering light.
Between snatches of poetry and penitence you left
the brumal wood of men and women. Snow drove
the butterflies home. You must know
how it goes, known all along what to expect,
sooner or later … the faded cadence of anonymity.
Frankly, my dear, frankly, my dear, frankly

Más blues y la verdad abstracta

Aparto el auto sobre un objeto, suave y grande;

En las mañanas estamos a oscuras;
incluso a finales de junio
dejamos el calabacín en la repisa.
Llamo a la abuela por un consejo
y ella dice, Oh ya sabes
solía cultivar tantas cosas.

Y también están el sangrado frecuente,
los pezones sensibles, y la podredumbre
bajo el tapete. Si no veo

O sigue secando
los cubiertos. Consigue trucha arcoíris. Pega el azulejo.
Compra una bolsa de cebollas. Bate un huevo. Sí,
cómo es que el gato sigue
lamiéndose de la garra a la cola.
Y cómo el cuerpo rompe
pan con la palabra cuando la palabra
se ha roto. Una. Y Otra. Vez.
Con el vino. Y la hogaza.
Y el excelente cristal
del cuerpo. Y ella dice,
Incluso. Si. El. Cielo. Se. Cae.
Mi. Rosa. De. Paz. Sigue. Floreciendo.

More Blues and the Abstract Truth

I back the car over a soft, large object;
hair appears on my chest in dreams.
The paperboy comes to collect
with a pit bull. Call Grandmother
and she says, Well you know
death is death and none other.

In the mornings we’re in the dark;
even at the end of June
the zucchini keep on the sill.
Ring Grandmother for advice
and she says, O you know
I used to grow so many things.

Then there’s the frequent bleeding,
the tender nipples, and the rot
under the floormat. If I’m not seeing
a cold-eyed doctor it is
another gouging mechanic.
Grandmother says, Thanks to the blue rugs
and Eileen Briscoe’s elms
the house keeps cool.

Well. Then. You say Grandmother
let me just ask you this:
How does a body rise up again and rinse
her mouth from the tap. And how
does a body put in a plum tree
or lie again on top of another body
or string a trellis. Or go on drying
the flatware. Fix rainbow trout. Grout the tile.
Buy a bag of onions. Beat an egg stiff. Yes,
how does the cat continue
to lick itself from toenail to tailhole.
And how does a body break
bread with the word when the word
has broken. Again. And. Again.
With the wine. And the loaf.
And the excellent glass
of the body. And she says,
Even. If. The. Sky. Is. Falling.
My. Peace. Rose. Is. In. Bloom
