Summer knowledge

Summer knowledge is not the winter’s truth, the truth of fall,

the autumn’s fruition, vision and recognition:

It is not May knowledge, little and leafing and growing green,

blooming out and blossoming white,

It is not the knowing and the knowledge of the gold fall and

the ripened darkening vineyard,

Nor the black tormented, drenched and rainy knowledge of birth,

    April, and travail,

The knowledge of the womb’s convulsions, and the coiled cord’s

ravelled artery, severed and cut open,

as the root forces its way up from the dark loam:

The agony of the first knowledge of pain is worse than death,

or worse than the thought of death:

No poppy, no preparation, no initiation, no illusion, only

the beginning, so distant from all knowledge

and all conclusion, all indecision and all illusion.

Summer knowledge is green knowledge, country knowledge,

the knowledge of growing and the supply recognition

of the fullness and the fatness and the roundness of ripeness.

It is bird knowledge and the knowing that trees possess when

The sap ascends to the leaf and the flower and the fruit,

Which the root never sees and the root believes in the darkness

and the ignorance of winter knowledge

—The knowledge of the fruit is not the knowledge possessed

by the root in its indomitable darkness of ambition

Which is the condition of belief beyond conception of

experience or the gratification of fruition.

Summer knowledge is not picture knowledge, nor is it the

knowledge of lore and learning.

It is not the knowledge known from the mountain’s height, it

is not the garden’s view of the distant mountains of hidden fountans;

It is not the still vision in a gold frame, it is not the

measured and treasured sentences of sentiments;

It is cat knowledge, deer knowledge, the knowledge of the

full-grown foliage, of the snowy blossom and the rounding fruit.

It is the phoenix knowledge of the wine and grap near

summer’s end, when the grape swells and the apple reddens:

It is the knowledge of the ripening apple when it moves to the

fullness of the time of falling to rottenness and death.

For summer knowledge is the knowledge of death as birth,

Of death as the soil of all abounding flowering flaring rebirth.

it is the knowledge of the truth of love and the truth of growing:

it is the knowledge before and after knowledge:

For, in a way, summer knowledge is not knowledge at all: it is

second nature, first nature fulfilled, a new birth

and a new death for rebirth, soaring and rising out

of the flames of turning October, burning November,

the towering and falling fires, growing more and

more vivid and tall

In the consummation and the annihilation of the blaze of fall.

no son las deliberadas y atesoradas frases de los sentimientos;

Out of the watercolored window, when you look

When from the watercolored window idly you look

Each is but and clear to see, not steep:

So does the neat print in an actual book

Marching as if to true conclusion, reap

The illimitable blue immensely overhead,

The night of the living and the day of the dead.
I drive in an auto all night long to reach

The apple which has sewed the sunlight up:

My simple self is nothing but the speech

Pleading for the overflow of that great cup,

The darkened body, the mind still as a frieze:

All else is merely means as complex as disease!

Socrates ghost must haunt me now

Socrates ghost must haunt me now,

Notorious death has let him go,

He comes to me with a clumsy bow,

Saying in his disused voice,

That I do not know I do not know,

The mechanical whims of appetite

Are all that I have of conscious choice,

The butterfly caged in eclectic light

Is my only day in the world’s great night,

Love is not love, it is a child

Sucking his thumb and biting his lip,

But grasp it all, there may be more!

From the topless sky to the bottomless floor

With the heavy head and the fingertip:

All is not blind, obscene, and poor.

Socrates stands by me stockstill,

Teaching hope to my flickering will,

Pointing to the sky’s inexorable blue

—Old Noumenon, come true, come true!

demuestra confianza a mi titubeante placer

O Love, sweet animal

O Love, dark animal,

With your strangeness go

Like any freak or clown:

Appease tee child in her

Because she is alone

Many years ago

Terrified by a look

Which was not meant for her.

Brush your heavy fur

Against her, long and slow

Stare at her like a book,

Her interests being such

No one can look too much.

Tell her how you know

Nothing can be taken

Which has not been given:

For you time is forgiven:

Informed by hell and heaven

You are not mistaken

Oh Amor, dulce animal

Oh Amor, oscuro animal

con tu rareza vas

como cualquier demente o patán:

tranquilizas a la niña

que  habita, desde hace muchos años,

su soledad,

niña aterrorizada por una mirada

que nunca fue para ella.

Para ella

cepillas tu pesado pelaje.

no puedes estar equivocado.

In the slight ripple, the the mind perceives the Heart

In the slight ripple, the fishes dart

Like fingers, centrifugal, like wishes

Wanton. And pleasures rise

as the eyes fall

Through the lucid water. The small pebble,

The clear clay bottom, the white shell

Are apparent, though superficial.

Who would ask more of the August afternoon?

Who would dig mines and follow shadows?

“I would,” answers bored Heart, “Lounger, rise”

(Underlip trembling, face white with stony anger),

“The old error, the thought of sitting still,

“The senses drinking, by the summer river,

“On the tended lawn, below the traffic,

“As if time would pause,

and afternoon stay.

“No, night comes soon,

“With its cold mountains, with desolation,

unless Love build its city.”

The kingdom of poetry

This is like light.

This is light,

Useful as light, as charming

And enchanting…

…Poetry is certainly

More interesting, more valuable,

and certainly more charming

Than Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, the Atlantic Ocean

And other much admired natural phenomena.

It is useful as light, and as beautiful

It is preposterous

Precisely, making it possible to say

One cannot carry a mountain, but a poem can be carried all over.

It is monstrous.

Pleasantly, for poetry can say, seriously or in play:

“Poetry is better than hope,

“For poetry is patience of hope, and all hope’s vivid pictures,

“Poetry is better than excitement, it is far more delightful,

“Poetry is superior to success, and victory, it endures in serene

blessedness

“Long after the most fabulous feat like fireworks has mounted and

fallen.

“Poetry is far more powerful and far more enchanting animal

“Than any wood, jungle, ark, circus or zoo possesses.”

For poetry magnifies and heighten reality:

Poetry says of reality that if it is magnificent, it is also stupid:

For poetry is, in a way, omnipotent;

For reality is various and rich, powerful and vivid, but it is not enough

Because it is disorderly and stupid or only at times, and erratically,

intelligent:

For without poetry, reality is speechless or incoherent:

It is inchoate, like the pomp and the bombast of thunder:

Its peroration verge upon the ceaseless oration of the ocean:

For reality glows and glory, without poetry,

Fake, like the red operas of sunset

The blue rivers and the windows of morning.

The arts of poetry makes it possible to say: Pandemonium.

For poetry is gay and exact. It says:

“The sunset resembles a bull-fight.

“A sleeping arm feels like soda, fizzing.”

Poetry resurrect the past from the sepulchre, like Lazarus.

It transforms a lion into a sphinx and a girl.

It gives a girl the splendor of Latin.

It transforms the water into wine at each marriage in Cana of Galilee.

For it is true that poetry invented the unicorn, the centaur and the phoenix.

Hence it is true that poetry is an everlasting Ark.

An omnibus containing, bearing and begetting all the mind’s animals.

Whence it is that poetry gave and gives tongue to forgiveness

Therefore a history of poetry would be a history of joy, and a history

of the mystery of love

For poetry provides spontaneously, abundantly and freely

The petnames and the diminutives which love requires and without

which the mystery of love cannot be mastered.

For poetry is like light, and it is light.

It shines over all, like the blue sky, with the same blue justice.

For poetry is the sunlight of consciousness:

It is also the soil of the fruits of knowledge

In the orchards of being:

It shows us the pleasures of the city.

It lights up the structures of reality.

It is a cause of knowledge and laughter:

It sharpens the whistles of the witty:

It is like morning and the flutes of morning, chanting and enchanted.

It is the birth and the rebirth of the first morning forever.

Poetry is quick as tigers, clever as cats, vivid as oranges,

Nevertheless, it is deathless: it is evergreen and in blossom; long after

the Pharaohs and the Caesars have fallen,

It shines and endures more than diamonds,

It is because poetry is the actuality of possibility, it is

The reality of the imagination,

The throat of exaltation,

The processions of possessions,

The motion of meaning and

The meaning of morning and

The mastery of meaning.

The praise of poetry is like the clarity of the heights of the mountains.

The heights of poetry are like the exaltation of the mountains.

It is the consummation of consciousness in the country of the morning!

El reino de la poesía

Es como la luz.

Es la luz,

útil como la luz,

tan amable y encantadora…

La poesía es superior a la emoción, es mucho más exquisita;

la poesía es, de alguna forma, omnipotente;

sin embargo, es inmortal: eternamente verde y floreciente;
