You didn’t want to stay.

You didn’t want to learn how to stay.

To stay and give in to drinking all the light that never dies.

So now the memory bribes you,

makes you hesitate and carry your hands to touch that what you don’t have.

Before one can touch it, one has to know how to say it, say it many times.

For a long time you have thought about unwinding, one after the other,

the strands that are getting tangled between your fingers.

For a long time you wanted to enumerate every particle of dust, every layer of sadness,

you wanted to enumerate every frustrated blow,

every trick to deceive the midday that used to chop your figure into shadows.

But you are not able to. You raise a hand to your head

and you realize that in this recount

there is an image you have of yourself and which is a stranger to you,

which you can only recognize in it’s outlines and from far away,

barely even in it’s shadow.

There is something that holds you back now.

You have said too much and have gotten into a problem.

The old pain that keeps you awake and, in the shadow,

holds a feeling of revenge for you.

You cannot advance as much as you would like to,

the desert you try to remember has turned into an even vaster place.

from Contraverano (2007)

No quisiste quedarte.

No quisiste aprender cómo quedarte.

Mucho tiempo has pensado destejer, una tras otra,

Has dicho demasiado y te has metido en un problema.

What was the desert before, still persists

and with a few lines you believe that you can recapture everything,

recapture that landscape where the summer carries out its inevitable destruction.

But something is different.

The streets you remember have deeper ditches,

the walls of the houses have cracks like lightning in the stone.

You believe that you can return to filling your pockets with sand,

believe that you can kick away remorse, rage and spite

as if that were an easy thing to do.

You believe that you can return and are surprised by a dry feeling in your throat.

You are also surprised by the affection that used to justify the scolding,

that feeling of not being alone without believing in God’s protection.

And in a low voice you utter

a blasphemy that comforts you alone.

Or could it be that everything you’ve said is nothing more than a supposition?

Or an impatient recount of the incidents?

Or a way to authenticate a lie?

Because you’re just another prey of oblivion.

And, your sides wounded by the sun,

have all your memories been burnt?

There isn’t a thing.

It’s hard for you to believe that there isn’t a thing.

You return searching for something that remains inside of you

and you realize that the only thing palpable you can call yours,

now that it’s already late and you’re exhausted,

is the body of a woman who cannot sleep

and awaits you in the other room.

You lay down the pen that you had taken to write down what you aren’t able to grasp,

you silently switch off every single light in the house.

A gleam of unrest remains.

You would like to continue but it’s late already.

From Contraverano (2007)

It’s hard to stay still

and only look at what is outside of one’s own self,

only listen to what the night suggests.

You know it’s better like this,

not changing your habit the slightest bit, not fighting the boredom,

letting darkness fall over everything you’re observing.

But this darkness isn’t enough to cast a shadow

over your memories.

It’s not enough to extinguish the summer’s fury that lives within you.

You wanted to resist the light that continually attacks your memory,

the light that makes you immobile sitting at the desk

where you are writing,

that makes you discover bitter words in your mouth,

the feeling of painful hunger.

You don’t know how to explain why the summer follows you,

why the sun of those days always keeps you restrained.

You cannot explain why your shadow grows large without permission,

why the movement of palm trees in the middle of a street

doesn’t seem so distant to you now,

not as much as the distance between what you forgot

and what you remember.

The voice of your memories couldn’t follow your will,

a part of you returns, without permission, to the regime of light,

where the heat implements its torment,

where death recurs and offers you its hand.

From Contraverano (2007)

no te parece ahora tan lejana,

In a putrid landscape of harbors and stations,

the charge carried by ships and trains

is a constant rhythm in my head.

A company of shadows tunes its machinery

and an army of fog,

which eats away everything,

tells us, between whistles:

The city’s a corpse and doesn’t know.

A woman with deep-set eyes

wanders around between the docks.

Her heels resound,

a blade of impatience settles in the chest and destroys it.

[In all of this there’s a certain discontent

nobody can escape.]

Close by the docks

the whores live on the walking desire

of the men who step off the ships,

tired of their own touch.

Over there, the noise of light and the city,

a flower of luxury, glowing with shop windows:

There is contempt in this brightness.

How great it would be if the windows exploded

or the theatres started burning

and not to know, in the end, that the night,

as it comes around the corner,

sharpens its knife

and that those who built their home in the shadow

will take by force

everything that was theirs.

Like that, death would be happy and quick,

not like this departure, drop after drop,

like a heavy,

dark

pounding,

that deafens everything.

[To die is nothing but a change of habits.]

Maybe taking a walk, going out

would be the most ad hoc thing to do.

But this tailcoat is old,

its buttons are battered!

oscuro

martilleo

que todo lo ensordece.

[Morir es solamente un cambio de costumbres.]

Tal vez pasear, salir hacia la calle,

sería lo más  ad hoc.

¡Pero este frac es viejo

tiene muy maltratado los botones!

Motionless, the darkness nests inside me

and there is no tomorrow.

Only my thoughts are sharp,

needles inserted between the eyes.

The harbor’s sadness is a waving handkerchief,

the pier is pounding in my head.

John Keats the song is over.

Brothers in death and contempt,

you and I will leave slender and breached bodies behind.

The song is over, nightingale.

Are you awake or sleeping by my side?

Not long ago, I was a

business company man.

Where has that pragmatic eloquence gone,

which my pen used to trace?

The ships in the harbor

unloaded goods that I used to deal with.

Monotonous telegraphs sung praise to me…

[I write down the word shipwreck,

I am touching a sinking silence,

everything here holds its breath.]

And the enormous Ocean roars and intimidates me

because it can never be completely conquered,

because it never gives up.

It watches and doesn’t let its rancor rest.

I can feel its pulse

while my chest explodes.

Where is your bravery, you proud seamen?

Where will the restless heroes be, belonging to

a nation taken along on the ship?

Life is never necessary,

but sailing is the only thing

important now.

Ulysseses, I greet all of you, unshakable

legends of ships and archebuses,

oriental treasures aboard,

their bodies, for a long time,

have been rotting in the depths.

I have not been a seaman,

I am just a gasp.

Just a foolish pain

is left, hidden far away from the sea.

I am the dry land that will fall on me.

The docks are moving away,

the air is set on fire

and the heart vaults with an outcry.

Every breath is like fire.

From TREVAS. Canción del navegante de si mismo. (2014)

John Keats el canto acaba;

hermanos en la muerte y el desprecio,

tú y yo vamos dejando magros cuerpos quebrados.

El canto acaba, ruiseñor

¿despierto estás o duermes a mi lado?

No ha mucho yo fui un hombre

de empresas comerciales.

¿Dónde ha quedado aquella pragmática elocuencia

que mi pluma trazaba?

Los barcos descargaron en el puerto

mercancías que yo traté en negocios.

Telégrafos monótonos cantaron mi alabanza…

[Escribo la palabra Naufragio

voy tocando un silencio que se hunde:

aquí todo aguanta la respiración.]

Y el mar enorme ruge y me amedrenta,

pues nunca es conquistado por completo,

pues nunca se resigna;

vigila y no descansa en su rencor.

Puedo sentir su pulso

mientras me estoy quebrando por el pecho.

¿Dónde queda el valor, altivos navegantes?

¿Dónde estarán los héroes sin descanso

de una nación llevada entre sus velas?

Vivir nunca es preciso,

mas navegar es lo único

que ahora es necesario

Ulises inflexibles os saludo:

leyendas de bajeles y arcabuces,

tesoros del oriente al abordaje,

sus cuerpos hace tiempo

se pudren en lo hondo.

No he sido un navegante,

soy apenas resuello.
