POETIC ART

A cow grazes in our memory

blood escapes from the teats

the landscape is killed by a shot

The cow insists on its routine

its tail scares away the boredom

the landscape revives in slow motion

The cow abandons the landscape

we continue hearing the lowing

our memory grazes now

in that immense loneliness

The landscape leaves our memory

the words change name

we are left weeping

on the blank page

The cow grazes now in the emptiness

the words are mounted on her

the language makes fun of us

ARTE POÉTICA

Una vaca pasta en nuestra memoria

la sangre escapa de las ubres

el paisaje es muerto de un disparo

La vaca insiste con su rutina

su cola espanta el aburrimiento

el paisaje resucita en cámara lenta

La vaca abandona el paisaje

continuamos escuchando los mugidos

nuestra memoria pasta ahora

en esa inmensa soledad

El paisaje deja nuestra memoria

las palabras cambian de nombre

nos quedamos llorando

sobre la página en blanco

La vaca pasta ahora en el vacío

las palabras están montadas sobre ella

el lenguaje se burla de nosotros

THE MESSENGER

She took the words out for a walk

and the words bit the children

and the children told their parents

and the parents loaded their guns

and opened fire upon the words

and the words whimpered, yelped

slowly licking their blind wounds

until at last they fell face down

on the bloody ground

And then came death

dressed in her best garment

and stopped at the poet’s house

to call him with desperate cries

and the poet opened the door

without suspecting what it was about

and saw death suspended by her shadow

sobbing

“Accompany me,” death said to him

“because today we are in mourning.”

“And who has died?” asked the poet

“Well, you have,” responded death

and extended her arms

to give him her sympathy

y sollozando

“Acompáñame”, le dijo aquélla

“porque hoy estamos de duelo”

“Y quién ha muerto”, preguntó el poeta

“Pues tú”, respondió la muerte

y le extendió los brazos

para darle el pésame

LAST MINUTE PRECAUTIONS

I must be careful of the worms

when they bury me

most certainly

they will speak badly of me

they will spit on my poems

and urinate on the fresh flowers

that will adorn my tomb

It may well be the case

that  they even devour my bones

tear out my intestines

or at the height of injustice

rob my gold tooth

And all this because in life

never did I write about them

PRECAUCIONES DE ÚLTIMA HORA

Debo cuidarme de los gusanos

cuando me entierren

lo más seguro

es que hablen mal de mí

que escupan sobre mis poemas

y orinen las flores frescas

que adornarán mi tumba

Llegado sea el caso

que hasta devoren mis huesos

me arranquen los intestinos

o en el colmo de la injusticia

se roben mi diente de oro

Y todo esto porque en vida

jamás escribí sobre ellos

THE SINATRA CLAN

All of the cats in my neighborhood

are Sinatra fans

they begin to la-la-la his themes

a soon as I put on the CD

and the voice flows

between the ceiling and the brick walls

At times they beg me

to repeat some single

then the sound of “My Way”

“New York” or “Let Me Try Again”

pricks up their whiskers

and throws them headfirst against the glass

This does not happen when I read my verses

they stretch, yawn

look away

or chat amongst themselves

in a lamentable display

of ignorance and sabotage

“You do not understand me”

I tell them

And I put on the CD again

so that Sinatra sings

and those cats are filled with poetry

EL CLAN SINATRA

Todos los gatos de mi barrio

son fanáticos de Sinatra

comienzan a tararear sus temas

apenas pongo el CD

y la voz se escurre

entre los techos y las panderetas

A veces me piden

que repita algún single

entonces el sonido de My way

New York o Let me try again

les para los bigotes

y los lanza de cabeza contra los vidrios

Esto no pasa cuando leo mis versos

se estiran, bostezan

miran para otro lado

o conversan entre ellos

en un acto lamentable

de ignorancia y sabotaje

“Ustedes no me comprenden”

les digo

Y vuelvo a encender el CD

para que cante Sinatra

y esos gatos se llenen de poesía

SCARS OF WAR

At times

when I get drunk

words take me home

on an old wooden tricycle

And far from removing my shoes

and putting me to bed

as would normally happen in these cases

they leave me sprawled in the garden

covered with ants

and with my face stuck to

the garden lamp

“That’s what you get for writing bad poems”

they tell me

and go off singing and laughing

hugging

my last beer

CICATRICES DE GUERRA

A veces

cuando me emborracho

las palabras me traen a casa

en un viejo triciclo de madera

Y lejos de quitarme los zapatos

y acostarme

como ocurre en estos casos

me dejan tirado en el jardín

lleno de hormigas

y con la cara pegada

al foco del alumbrado

“Eso te pasa por escribir malos poemas”

me dicen

y se marchan cantando y riendo

abrazadas

a mi última cerveza

BLACK SYMPHONY

Eve hung her dead from the window

so that the air might lick the faces

impregnated with scars

She looked at those faces and smiled

while the wind pushed her breasts

to the wormy night

An orgy of aromas shook the silence

where she desired herself

and among sighs and good-byes

a blind cricket weeded

his old violins

No one approached Eve

when she suckled her dead

the anger and the cold

fought over her adolescence

the orgasm gave way to  horror

the desire to  blood

and  small violent creatures

took off  from her belly

populating the dawn

with conflict and nightmares

After

when all was calm

and the shadows finally

went back to their source

Eve put away her dead

kissing them on the mouth

and she slept naked on top of them

until the next full moon

SINFONÍA NEGRA

Eva colgaba sus muertos de la ventana

para que el aire lamiera los rostros

preñados de cicatrices

Ella miraba esos rostros y sonreía

mientras el viento empujaba sus senos

hacia la noche agusanada

Una orgía de aromas sacudía el silencio

donde ella se deseaba a sí misma

y entre suspiros y adioses

un grillo ciego desmalezaba

sus antiguos violines

Nadie se acercaba a Eva

cuando daba de mamar a sus muertos

la cólera y el frío

se disputaban su adolescencia

el orgasmo daba paso al horror

el deseo a la sangre

y pequeñas criaturas violentas

despegaban de su vientre

poblando los amaneceres

de luto y de pesadillas

Luego

cuando todo quedaba en calma

y las sombras por fin

regresaban a su origen

Eva guardaba sus muertos

besándolos en la boca

y dormía desnuda sobre ellos

hasta la próxima luna llena
