Rupture

Long ago when we were family

before they beat us with fists and their feet

and the sound of the moon on the returning sea

roaring from our mouths

made them stop,

my soul remembers

light pouring in from the east

a room of ideas

under a canopy of Kauri

beneath the earth,

where the first seed

waited its turn,

rupturing

so your heart would remember

when you said it was no trouble at all

and we didn’t bother with names

there wasn’t any need,

waving as I steered back into traffic

your outstretched hand

in the rear view mirror,

and the memory of your voice

warm like the afternoon sun.
