Waiting for Perec

Esperando a Perec

I

Trailer of Past Lives

The unconscious is an asylum

with an ocean view

Every fish that comes up from the water

wears a straitjacket

I

Tráiler de vidas pasadas

El inconsciente es un manicomio

con vista al mar

Cada pez que sale del agua

trae camisa de fuerza

I saw a blank page

wandering in a field

of the imagination

It looked like a ballerina

on the verge of giving birth

1

Vi una página en blanco

vagando por los campos

de la irrealidad

Parecía una bailarina

a punto de dar a luz

2

I saw Pizarnik arise

from a mirror of water

Huidobro had her in his arms

It was night

Death slept naked

on God’s corpse

2

Vi a Pizarnik salir

de un espejo de agua

Huidobro la llevaba en brazos

Era de noche

La muerte dormía desnuda

sobre el cadáver de Dios

I saw God kissing death

at a café in Paris

He had a centuries-long beard

and an umbrella

to scare off loneliness

It was summer

His shadow fanned himself

with Van Gogh’s ear

7

Vi a Dios besando a la muerte

en un café de París

Llevaba una barba de siglos

y un paraguas

para espantar la soledad

Era verano

Su sombra se echaba viento

con la oreja de van Gogh

The Illusions Are Plagiarized

The ants that lick the hands of the dead

turn into nomadic beings

that wander all night in a salt desert

II

Los espejismos son un plagio

Las hormigas que lamen las manos de los muertos

se convierten en ánimas errantes

que vagan toda la noche por un desierto de sal

I saw Marilyn Monroe breastfeeding her shadow

she had sad breasts

and wore a straightjacket to bed

She had something revealing tattooed on her back

God was also my lover

12

Vi a Marilyn Monroe dando de mamar a su sombra

tenía los pechos tristes

y usaba camisa de fuerza para dormir

Se había tatuado en la espalda algo revelador

También Dios fue mi amante

I saw death enter a mirrorless hotel

I saw the concierge close a door to infinity

I saw God leave Rimbaud’s arms

I saw death board a trolley

I saw a sign in the lobby: Closed for mourning

I saw the police arrive, I saw photographers

I saw an old ambulance remove a corpse

I saw the concierge in the ambulance naked

I saw his neck slashed, I saw blood

I saw his ox eyes heading to the slaughterhouse

I saw his name written on God’s back

His name was Verlaine

16

17

I saw God take

my son’s toys

He didn’t have a childhood

death tells me in a dream

He buries them in a pit

with his mother’s bones

17

Vi a Dios llevarse los juguetes

de mi hijo

Él no tuvo infancia

me dijo la muerte en un sueño

Los entierra en una fosa

junto a los huesos de su madre

Déjà Vu for Beginners

The rivers returned home

and locked themselves in to cry

themselves to sleep

III

Déjà vu para principiantes

Los ríos regresaron a casa

y se encerraron a llorar

hasta quedarse dormidos

24

I saw God writing his epitaph

Here lies the one who was never a child

The toys I stole

will be returned by my mother

I’m going to Neverland

to recover lost time

24

Vi a Dios escribiendo su epitafio

Aquí yace el que no tuvo infancia

Los juguetes que robé

serán devueltos por mi madre

Me voy al país de Nunca Jamás

a recobrar el tiempo perdido

29

I saw a tomb that said:

Beware

God steals the toys

of dead children

The one who lies under this stone

was his first victim

29

Vi una tumba que decía:

Cuidado

Dios se roba los juguetes

de los niños muertos

El que yace bajo esta losa

fue su primera víctima
