Presentamos, en versión del poeta peruano Antonio Cisneros, un texto del poeta inglés Edwin Brock (1927-1997). Además de escribir poesía se dedicó a la publicidad y durante un tiempo fue policía. Fue editor de poesía de la revista Ambit. En 1990 se publicó su antología Five Ways To Kill A Man’: New and Selected Poems.
Cinco maneras de matar a un hombre
Hay múltiples métodos engorrosos para matar a un hombre.
Se le puede obligar a que cargue un tablón de madera
hasta la cumbre de un monte y entonces clavarlo. Para que esto
resulte es necesario una multitud de gente
que lleve sandalias, un gallo que cante, un manto
para disecarlo, una esponja, un poco de vinagre y un
hombre que martille los clavos en su sitio.
O es posible buscarse un pedazo de acero
de forma y monturas tradicionales
y tratar de penetrar esta jaula de metal que lo protege.
Si éste es el caso, te hacen falta cabellos blancos,
árboles ingleses, hombres con arcos y flechas,
dos banderas por lo menos, un príncipe y un
castillo donde celebrar el banquete.
Dejando de lado los escrúpulos, puedes también, si el viento
lo permite, asfixiarlo con gas. Pero entonces necesitas
una milla de fango tallada por trincheras,
sin olvidar las botas negras, los cráteres de bombas,
más fango, una plaga de ratas, docenas de canciones
y algunos sombreros circulares hechos de acero.
En una era de aviación, puedes volar
a muchas millas por encima de tu víctima y liquidarla
con sólo apretar un botoncito. Todo lo que se requiere,
en este caso, es un océano que los separe, dos
sistemas de gobierno, los científicos del país,
algunas fábricas, un sicópata y un pedazo de
tierra que nadie va a necesitar por varios años.
Estos son, como dije antes, métodos engorrosos
para matar a un hombre. Más sencillo, directo, y mucho
más limpio es asegurarse de que vive en algún lugar
del siglo veinte, y ahí dejarlo.
Five ways to kill a man
There are many cumbersome ways to kill a man.
You can make him carry a plank of wood
to the top of a hill and nail him to it.
To do this properly you require a crowd of people
wearing sandals, a cock that crows, a cloak
to dissect, a sponge, some vinegar and one
man to hammer the nails home.
Or you can take a length of steel,
shaped and chased in a traditional way,
and attempt to pierce the metal cage he wears.
But for this you need white horses,
English trees, men with bows and arrows,
at least two flags, a prince, and a
castle to hold your banquet in.
Dispensing with nobility, you may, if the wind
allows, blow gas at him. But then you need
a mile of mud sliced through with ditches,
not to mention black boots, bomb craters,
more mud, a plague of rats, a dozen songs
and some round hats made of steel.
In an age of aeroplanes, you may fly
miles above your victim and dispose of him by
pressing one small switch. All you then
require is an ocean to separate you, two
systems of government, a nation’s scientists,
several factories, a psychopath and
land that no-one needs for several years.
These are, as I began, cumbersome ways to kill a man.
Simpler, direct, and much more neat is to see
that he is living somewhere in the middle
of the twentieth century, and leave him there.
