SLEEPLESSNESS

Now that we don´t sleep as we used to,
and in the dark silence we gaze at one another
like nocturnal ghosts stirring up our restlessness.

Now that we have grown older with the years
without them offering us any lesson in exchange.

Now that we have grown stronger with the years
when we hardly have any need to defend ourselves.

By your side I know I´ll have new light.
Enigmatic light, so clear and pure
that it´s only seen in what it reveals.

GOLD

We search within the implausible
for the immediacy of truth,
in the disastrous pursuit of the impossible.
We err.
Let us look for the truth
that is hidden in the sand,
certain of finding,
behind appearances,
that which the light
-capricious net-
separates and reserves for us.

POETICS

Because I hardly remember
the life not lived
I’m leaving it written
in a few lines.

ASHES

There is a light at the end of the corridor,
a song deep within my ear,
a word deep within my mouth,
an image deep within memory.

There´s also a dish in the kitchen;
an unopened book on the table
whose ending is known;
a kiss in the air
afraid to shatter against the ground;
a trembling stamp
faced with unwritten letters;
a “let me tell you,” a “sleep beside me;”
an “I won´t come for dinner, I have too much work to do;”
an “if you leave, don´t come back,” a “never leave me.”

Who caused the fire that left these ashes?

A NEW MAN

Forget what you know.
Empty your memory.
Let your mind go blank.

Only this way you´ll be a new man.

If you aren´t able to lie,
you´ll feel the breath of bewilderment
on the back of your neck,
the paleness of those
who are taken aback by their opponents
and you’ll see fear reflected
In their eyes, like a flame
that slowly feeds
the bonfire it causes.

Memories burn even by the sea.
Water always finds the way back
the momentary signs of a past life.

Don´t carry suitcases:
they aren’t luggage, just dead weight.

LIGHT, AGAINST THE LIGHT

One who turns the light off
doesn´t always look for sleep.
Sometimes, in the darkness,
his eyes get used to seeing
what they can´t see during the day:
a child is running
after an always evasive ball,
there is a teenager with a book in his hands.
Behind his glasses,
love that doesn’t find reflections.
All of them are protected by the shadow of a poet:
Alberti, Juan Ramón, Machado, Federico;
then Ángel González, Machado, Jaime Gil…
all of them tell him how,
they discover the reasons
while somebody asks
“how will we know when.”

The young man, sip after sip,
drinks the coffee of time and becomes a man,
to be exact a father,
dubious lighthouse,
at the mercy, as ever, of the hours:
a few of them restful ones,
the rest, chasing the same as
that boy who could never play ball.
The one who turns the light on now is not the same man.

NO

If flowers run away from the gardens
and tears flow into the eye.
If it rains towards the clouds.
If the tree grows into the earth
and plunges its roots into the air.
If the sun illuminates your insomnia
and the moon warms up the midday.

If you advance backwards
you don´t return to the start.

ART OF POETRY

The first line can be brilliant.
The end, surprising.
Between one and the other you must be you.

Never silence.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

I light up a new day
in case the world wants to greet me,
and on opening the windows I count the embraces
that the night has left on the glass:
I find the ones I expected to find, those that are always there,
those that maybe won´t return, those that on leaving
printed, indelibly,
the trace of a good-bye
while others left
the insignificant fog of their breath
as when we were children playing in winter.

Memories and the present intertwine,
those which are light
and those whose shadow doesn´t soothe.

Under this August sun,
I only want the refuge of those who protect me,
not the branch of the tree that will burn under the lightning
of gossip or envy,
not the hypnotic rattle
of those who are snakes under their human skin,
not the tender kisses of those who never know
how to distinguish the summer from venom.

You must decide who you are,
decide if I deserve
to discover your name one morning
on the list the night leaves on the windowsill.

REINCARNATIONS

One of my grandmothers nearly
manages to drink a toast to
the last night of two different centuries:
she was born in the 19th century and she almost
reached the year 2000 as she wished.
She saw everything during her, almost, 100 years,
love and war, her children and death,
the absence of her husband, fortune and hunger.
Tireless Penelope, she knitted huge bedspreads,
anklets and shawls for her granddaughters,
and left us as an inheritance an old hearing aid
which, we knew later, had never worked.

The other one, my mother´s mother,
started a lineage of herculean women
which continues today in her daughters and granddaughters,
strong women who wear on their faces
dignity and pride, who carry on their backs
the shared memory of so many dead.
She was born in the 20th century and saw, without joy,
how ours began, so far away.
The playing cards that made their old age happy
didn´t share the wild cards properly.

It’s still easy to find them
in the cities that gave them shelter,
sharing a cup of coffee with their friends,
dictating recipes, sewing a hem.

They don’t look the same, they have different names
and they were widowed at different ages.

Nevertheless, if you look at them carefully
you’ll see that they don’t age, they don’t die,
they only reincarnate.

They are everlasting women.

DUERMEVELA

ORO

 Rebuscamos entre lo inverosímil
la inmediatez de lo certero
en desastrosa persecución de lo imposible.
Erramos.
Busquemos en la arena
la verdad que se esconde,
seguros de encontrar
detrás de la apariencia
aquello que la luz
-cedazo ocasional-
separa y nos reserva.

POÉTICA
Porque apenas recuerdo
la vida no vivida
voy dejándola escrita
en unos cuantos versos.

CENIZAS

Queda una luz al fondo del pasillo,
una música al fondo del oído,
una palabra al fondo de la boca,
una imagen al fondo del recuerdo.

Queda también un plato en la cocina;
un libro sin abrir sobre la mesa
con su final ya conocido;
un beso por el aire
con miedo de estrellarse contra el suelo;
un sello tembloroso
ante cartas no escritas;
un déjame decirte, un duérmete a mi lado;
un no vengo a comer, tengo mucho trabajo;

No sabiendo mentir

Alberti, Juan Ramón, Machado, Federico;
después Ángel González, Vallejo, Jaime Gil…
todos le dicen cómo,
descubren el porqué
mientras alguien pregunta

NO

cubrecamas enormes, escarpines y chales,

y enviudaron a diferente edad.

Si las miras despacio, sin embargo,
verás que ni envejecen ni se mueren,
tan solo se reencarnan.

Son mujeres perpetuas.
