The Walt Whitman Award 2010
Today at Círculo de Poesía we present a poem of Carl Adamshick (1969). He’s poet. His book, Curses and Wishes, was selected by Marvin Bell for the 2010 Walt Whitman Award. In 2012, the collection won the Stafford/Hall Award for Poetry from Literary Arts.

Colorado
My dream lives close to my lungs.
Sometimes I feel it as a pen
spilling ink in the dark purse
of my breathing. My body
lives here in Colorado,
in an apartment with a few plants.
I am what the experts refer to
as history, a small totality
making its way to the future.
In the evening, I inherit death
as an idea, as a subject I’ll be tested on.
Mid-afternoons, I take long walks.
I live by myself as the state lives
by itself in borders it had nothing
to do with. I, too, have a river.
If you ask, I’ll tell you all about the light.
Colorado
Mi sueño vive cerca de mis pulmones.
A veces lo siento como una pluma
derramando tinta en la oscura bolsa
de mi respiración. Mi cuerpo
vive aquí en Colorado,
en un apartamento con algunas plantas.
Soy lo que los expertos llaman
una historia, una pequeña totalidad
construyendo su camino hacia el futuro.
En la noche heredo la muerte
como una idea, como una materia en que seré calificado.
Por la tarde tomo largas caminatas.
Vivo por mí mismo como el estado vive
por sí mismo en fronteras donde nada
tiene que hacer. Yo también tengo un río.
Si me lo pides, te diré todo sobre la luz.
