Paleozoico

Palaeozoic

It’s hard to say how skeletons arose.
The first intention, perhaps, the first
certainty migrating to the surface of the skin,
the decision to move to the city, a brick layer.

Shells may have been wastes disposed
on the outside of the body, slow corals
that grew as the uselessness of inside
made its way to use, to irony.

For what advantage? To be able to push back?
The first bones were the first yearning for rock,
already there were the impossible nostalgias,
the mineral homesickness, the heavy heart.

There is a small bump on your collar bone.
I imagine it now to have been the start
of a new decision, the slow radial wish of ribs
beyond me.

voluntad.

Todo importa y no es nada.

Tirabuzones esculpidos en piedra. Muy físico.

The limpness of a bird’s legs in flight

The place, the question, the question.

The place, the interest, the question.

There is the place.
There is what you do in the place.
There is your belief.
There is the faith in a knowing.
There is your instruction
by the gods.
There is your instruction as you are told.
There is your relief.
There is your disquiet.
There is your encounter.
That was it there.
Your encounter in the night.
Or before a flippant and loud
late afternoon sky.
A giant stone toe at the site of an ancient oracle.

There is the place.
What do you turn your face to in the name of instruction?
When you follow what the bells arrange
for the afternoon air
when you keep going
you’re laying on your path surprise
because the dress you are wearing is destiny
and you can like that or you can not like that.
I am talking about
will.

Everything matters and is nothing.

Ringlets carved in stone. Very physical.

Fin

Dans la plaine les preuves s’érodent
À vol d’oiseau on croirait un chat
Faisant ses griffes sur ta main
Mais le sang ne vient pas

Les vases cassés dans ta voix
Disent sans jamais la dire entière
La seconde qu’il faut pour disparaître

Akii

dame la tierra
llámala por su nombre

Akii, que significa suciedad
o suelo o moléculas.

ohmamaaminaan
madre de todos nosotros

ella vive en la médula
a lo largo de la línea interior

de la costa que llevo
en la entrepierna del ojo.

déjame pertenecerle,
hija de todo

he amado
lagos y abetos

y montañas
bajo la oscuridad.

di que pertenezco aquí,
a  este lugar, ahora

y por cada vez
que confundan

por los pronombres incorrectos
o el viejo nombre,

déjala responder por mí:
Gaawiin, nidanis

no, mi hija
es la misma mujer

que hice
al nacer.

Akii

give me the land,
call her by her name,

Akii, meaning dirt
or soil or molecules.

ohmamaaminaan,
mother of us all,

she lives in marrow,
along the inner line

of shoreline I carry
in the eye’s inseam.

let me be hers,
daughter of everything

I have loved,
lakes and spruce

and mountains
under blackness.

say I belong here,
this place, now—

and for every time
they misgender me

by the wrong pronouns
or the old name,

let her answer for me:
Gaawiinnidanis

no, my daughter
is the same woman

I made her
at birth.

de sedienta

Esta ciudad es hermosa
inquebrantable y amorosa como párpados,
en las calles, presionada por despedidas feroces,
aterrizajes sumergidos,

from thirsty

This city is beauty
unbreakable and amorous as eyelids,
in the streets, pressed with fierce departures,
submerged landings,
I am innocent as thresholds
and smashed night birds, lovesick,
as empty elevators

let me declare doorways,
corners, pursuit, let me say
standing here in eyelashes, in
invisible breasts, in the shrinking lake
in the tiny shops of untrue recollections,
the brittle, gnawed life we live,
I am held, and held

the touch of everything blushes me,
pigeons and wrecked boys,
half-dead hours, blind musicians,
inconclusive women in bruised dresses
even the habitual grey-suited men with terrible
briefcases, how come, how come
I anticipate nothing as intimate as history

would I have had a different life
failing this embrace with broken things,
iridescent veins, ecstatic bullets, small cracks
in the brain, would I know these particular facts,
how a phrase scars a cheek, how water
dries love out, this, a thought as casual
as any second eviscerates a breath

and this, we meet in careless intervals,
in coffee bars, gas stations, in prosthetic
conversations, lotteries, untranslatable
mouths, in versions of what we may be,
a tremor of the hand in the realization
of endings, a glancing blow of tears
on skin, the keen dismissal in speed
