Today at Círculo de Poesía we present two poems of Elana Bell, her debut poetry book Eyes, Stone, received the Walt Whitman Award 2011. Bell has conducted poetry workshops for educators, women in prison, teenagers across the country.

Letter to Arafat

In the rebuilt café where the bride exploded with the glass, we order cappuccino to sip with our cigarettes. Across the invisible line, only Arabic coffee. In Gaza they make rockets from lead pipe and nails. We say animals. Is a body worth a body? What if it has wept in the rain? Whispered the ninety-nine names of God and claimed one for itself. In the first light. Before morning.

Carta para Arafat

En la cafetería reconstruida, donde la novia explotó con el vaso, pedimos capuchino para sorber junto con los cigarros. A través de la línea invisible, sólo café árabe. En Gaza hacen cohetes de plomo y clavos. Decimos animales. ¿Es un cuerpo digno de un cuerpo? ¿Qué tal si ha llorado en la lluvia? Susurró los noventa y nueve nombres de Dios y reclamó uno por sí mismo. En la primera luz. Antes del amanecer.

Your camels carried the sand to build our houses

Fig-tree prickly-pear human-flood

You were the wasteland we made bloom
