Step barefoot through the awning stretch a right hand to the stone floor carry its quiet to a forehead cup the heart in a palm watch dance for the first time watch dance for the last time the very last time blood draining flesh straining to reach the sky as they surge forth goddesses in blue and purple and ochre first one then twos and threes till they fill the eyes fill a horizon fill heavens with colour and light one sharp precise stroke after another spark constellations with the echo of a heel on stone floor anchor galaxies on crossed arms nudge the winter sun awake with the curve of a brow gather storms in their eyes erase thought girdle time birth that single fleeting moment when you feel alive*

TEMPUS FUGIT

pienso). Me gustaría morir mirándote bailar

pienso me gustaría morir.

me gustaría morir, pienso, mirando tu baile

TEMPUS FUGIT

I think I would like to die watching you dance,

feet staying quicksilver skies, arms a swift crease

of light across longitudes. Stars rise from trance

at your touch, drape the stage with night while stagehands

mix music (bass from springtides, then soughing trees,

I think). I would like to die watching you dance

this tango with Mistress Time – trellised, by chance

or choice, in memory’s arms –, transform a frieze

to light. Across longitudes, she twists in trance

till lips landlocked by your will blaze morning, lance

the inky continent, where – like yestreen breeze –

I think I would like to die. Watching you dance,

scissor land and sea, curve orbits with bare hands,

Time learns to whirl on lone, hennaed feet: release

of light on longitudes. Stars fall into trance

as you plummet out of life: no backward glance

of farewell, no thunder, no tears. With such ease

would I like to die, I think, watching your dance

– like lightning on longitudes – strike and entrance.

HÁBITOS: REGRESAR

Doloroso de perder, demasiado

fácil de recuperar. Da vuelta,

y allí una vez más, sin parpadear,

te espera. Inevitable, inmanente,

esa cosa que huiría pero parece atrapado

en el para siempre, casi.

Casi.

HABITS: RETURN

Painful to lose, far

too easy to recover. Turn around,

and there once again, unblinking,

it waits. Inevitable, immanent,

that thing you would flee but seem stuck

with forever, almost.

Almost.

Almost a lisp, less than a hare lip?

There are habits and there are habits.

Breathing is a habit I try to acquire.

You are the one I try to shed.

Constancia III

Están aquí. Otra vez. La noche se alza en mis entrañas. Los cielos zozobran.

Secuaces. Señores feudales. Aliados. Sumos sacerdotes. Semidioses. Quizás

Incluso reyes.

No saluden a profetas, a espíritus

Sacros, a los santos. No invoquen cielo e infierno. No

Intimiden, no engañen.

Constancy III

They are here. Again. Night rises in my gut. Skies capsize.

Henchmen. Overlords. Allies. High priests. Demigods. Perhaps

Even kings. Here. A constellation of despots and lies.

Do not speak to us, Masters. Do not blaze Faith Honour DutyAllegiance to God and Country in hearth and head until we

Yield: pledge future, selves and reason. Do not hail prophets, holy

Spirits, the saints. Do not invoke heaven and hell. Do not

Browbeat, do not cajole. Do not feign pity, nor kinship, nor

Entice with promises of unseen treasures — justice, safety

Freedom.  You would arrive, we knew, with the threat of gifts — and more.

Only answer, then leave: where is the battle this time, on whose

Rightful land? And how many men will you summon from our door,

Enlist as living shield for heroes? Spare him. Spare us. Spare us

Three days. And he is yours. Yours, for we never had a choice.

Hunger or royal dungeons are yet more spears to tear out

Entrails — war but a swifter end. Now leave, lest rage find voice,

Blight you, finally hurl: may you never taste faith or grief,Amity, awe; you waging war and peace to metreTime on earth, may your eyes never enjoy your own fief.Three days, then, to steep each nook of home and heart with his

Lilt, his laugh. Three days to touch a gaze in relief,

Etch smile and sudden frown in folios of the mind.
